SVFD offers free Home Fire Safety Visits to residents in their service area. In as little as 30 minutes, they will evaluate current fire safety conditions in the home, including smoke alarms, fire hazards, carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, and more.

Examines structures for fire and life safety hazards such as:   -  Blocked or locked exits -  Tall dry grass -  Improperly stored combustible materials   Reports on hazardous structures may be made anonymously by anyone.   Parties responsible for the hazard are issued a violation notice that orders correction of the danger within a prescribed time period.

The Fire Prevention Division provides information and responds to complaints regarding a variety of subjects such as emergency planning, hazardous materials storage, fire and life safety hazards, outdoor burning, and permits.

Service area covers Bonney Lake, Sumner, Lake Tapps, South Prairie, Edgewood, Milton and the Ridge communities.

The ordinances regulate and control the design, construction, and quality of material use and occupancy, location and placement, and repair and maintenance of all buildings and structures in unincorporated Yakima County.   Building and Fire Safety also enforces the zoning ordinances, abatement of dangerous buildings and public nuisances ordinance, flood hazard ordinance, state energy code, state indoor air quality code, and the Yakima County abandoned vehicle ordinance.
